Interior & Equipment
The original spotless interior is remarkable, as you would expect from such a low mileage example. The Rainbow trim in grey colour scheme can only be described as new, its incredible with no signs of wear, bagging or damage anywhere and is beautifully clean and bright. The original colour-keyed velour carpet is spotless and free from wear having been protected from new by genuine rubber Ford over mats. The small-diameter steering wheel with a ‘soft feel’ rim is as new, all switchgear, interior lighting, three-speed heater, perforated grey headlining, front and rear seatbelts, and unmarked dashboard again are all as new as they left the factory back in March 1988. The centre header mounted digital clock works perfectly with a crystal clear LCD display and the original Ford factory fit stereo radio/cassette with ‘joystick’ speaker balance control operates perfectly. The speedo and tachometer operate perfectly. Fabric trim door cards are unmarked and still remain as per factory fit, as is the perfectly straight rear parcel shelf again still looking as new. Exterior
This 80’s hot hatch is finished in factory optional Ford Diamond White, (code B4), and has a brilliant uniformed deep shine throughout. All original panels are perfectly straight and gaps as per it left the factory, never welded and never restored. The underside is immaculate the whole car from new has been professionally Ziebart treated. All original trim sections, bumpers and single red body-side coachline are correct and in excellent order with no fading or distortion, as are the original halogen headlamps and front driving lamps. All original factory glass is in excellent order and has the number plate etched into each window this was a clever security feature of the 80’s. Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The original genuine five pepperpot 13” X 6” alloy wheels have been refurbished to the highest standard, shod with 5 original unmarked and no cracks Pirelli P6 185/60 HR x 13 Tyres all with fantastic tread depth it just doesn’t get any better than this. The servo assisted brakes with ventilated 9.4” front discs and 7.0” rear drums work perfectly with a very positive peddle feel.
Engine & Transmission
The super reliable free-revving 1597cc (2V) OHC (CVH) engine punches out a lively 96BHP at 6000rpm. Such fun to drive, precise steering and responsive handling along with the unique XR2 sound through the brand new original Ford exhaust is just addictive. The engine is super quiet, starts instantly hot or cold, no smoke rattles or leaks, pulls strong flawlessly through every gear. The clutch and 5-speed gearbox operate perfectly as you would expect. With 0-60 in just 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 112mph you cannot fail to be impressed.
Summary
Registered new on the 1stMarch 1988 by Ford Main Dealer and Official Rallye Sport Centre Thomas Motors Limited, Blackpool to Mr Grant Levy who subsequently part exchanged the car to Vandenwal Motors Limited of Putney London in November 1988. The car was then immediately purchased by Professor Frank Height of South West London who cherished the car for the next 28 years, the original Ford Vehicle Sales order form and invoice dated 15thNovember 1988 remain in the file.
Every MOT from the first in 1991 to 2005 are in the history file at this point the car read 39994 miles the car was then kept in dry storage and unused until December 2016 when it was MOT’d again on 16thDecember 2016 at 40004 miles. During December 2016 this cherished XR2 was subject to full recommissioning at a cost of circa £2000. Nothing was missed everything was checked or replaced from front to back, the history file details all the work and parts used to the present day.
The history file contains the original 2 Ford keys, 1 key fits all exterior original locks, ignition and petrol cap. Ford Leather bound folder with Ford Service plan fully stamped up from the first on 15thMay 1988 at 1300 miles to the last when it was taken into storage on 20thOctober 2005 at 39994 miles. The original Ford Owners handbook, Ford Audio handbook, Ford Dealer Directory and a Ford Car Model Range Brochure, last tax disc in original dealer tax disc holder dated 31stJune 2005 prior to going into storage are all in the history file. The MK2 Ford Fiesta XR2 was introduced in 1984 with a 12bhp power improvement on its predecessor, with a 0-60 time of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 112mph, as described by Ford 'the little car with a big heart, strong and sophisticated, potent and practical, a versatile family-sized hatchback as well as a sizzling little sports car'...
